Bill Overview

This act abolishes the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and authorizes the Governor to transfer its powers, duties, personnel, and property as part of a reorganization plan under existing law. The Commissioner of Education shall continue to serve as the chief administrative officer of the State Board of Education and shall assist in the implementation of the provisions of the act. Subject to the approval of both the Governor and the State Board of Education, the Commissioner may retain or employ certain staff members who are necessary to assist with the implementation of the provisions of the act.
